CET Senior Secondary 2026 — exam pattern and the full syllabus
120 questions, 240 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes, one-third negative marking and a fifth option E — the Senior Secondary CET exactly as advertisement 08/2026 sets it out, its 12 syllabus headings, and where it differs from the Graduation paper.
Update — 23 September 2026: the exam date has changed. The pattern and syllabus below are unchanged; only the date is awaited.
The Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB) sets out the Senior Secondary level Common Eligibility Test in advertisement number 08/2026. What follows is what that advertisement says — the scheme, the OMR rules, the twelve headings — and the comparison anyone sitting both CETs needs.
The date
The board's chairman has said the exam is being put back because of the local body and panchayat elections (press report, 22 September 2026). The board has issued no written notification of a new date, so none is given here — this post will be updated as soon as one appears.
The paper
Paragraph 17 on page 15 fixes four things:
| |
|---|
| Questions | 120 |
| Marks | 240 |
| Time | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Negative marking | one-third of a question's marks per wrong answer |
All questions are multiple choice and carry equal marks — 240 across 120 is 2 marks each, so a wrong answer costs a third of 2. There is one paper, and every heading below sits inside it.
Five options, and the rule that catches people out
Page 22 carries the OMR instructions, and they are stricter than most candidates assume.
- Every question has five circles — A, B, C, D and E. E is the circle for a question you are not attempting, and darkening it is compulsory.
- If no circle is darkened at all, one-third of that question's marks is deducted — exactly what a wrong answer costs.
- Ten extra minutes are given after the scheduled time for exactly this — darkening E wherever you skipped.
- Leave more than 10% of the questions — more than 12 out of 120 — with no circle darkened, and you are disqualified.
A skipped question still has to be recorded as skipped.
The 12 syllabus headings
Pages 16 to 22 divide the syllabus into twelve headings.
- History of Rajasthan — ancient civilisations and archaeological sites, prominent rulers, the Revolt of 1857, peasant, tribal and Praja Mandal movements, and the Integration of Rajasthan.
- Art and Culture of Rajasthan — architecture and painting, folk music, dance and theatre, sects and folk deities, dress, fairs and festivals, dialects and literature.
- Geography of India — physical features, rivers, dams, lakes and oceans, wildlife, climatic conditions, major tribes, and disaster management and climate change.
- Geography of Rajasthan — physical features, climate, vegetation and soils, water, forest and mineral resources, livestock, wildlife, population, tribes and tourism.
- Indian political system with special reference to Rajasthan — the nature of the Constitution and Fundamental Rights, the main offices and bodies at the Centre, Rajasthan's administrative system and Panchayati Raj.
- Economy of Rajasthan — agriculture, industry, animal husbandry and minerals, State income and budget, unemployment and drought, welfare schemes, MGNREGA and VB-G RAM G.
- Everyday Science — physical and chemical change, catalysts, carbon compounds and polymers, light and defects of vision, genetics, ecosystems, biotechnology, blood groups and disease.
- Logical Reasoning and Mathematics — blood relations, series, clock and calendar, percentage, interest and ratio, time-speed-distance, area and volume, data graphs, coding-decoding and seating arrangement.
- Current Affairs — State and national events, famous personalities, programmes and policies, civic duties, and the Rajasthan Public Examination Act, 2022.
- Public Health — first aid and CPR, types of drug abuse and their prevention, physical and mental fitness of the young, and the health risks of social media addiction.
- Computer Knowledge — characteristics and applications of computers, computer organisation including memory (RAM, ROM), file system and input/output devices, and MS Office.
- Language Knowledge — General Hindi (संधि, समास, prefixes and suffixes, synonyms and antonyms, शब्द-युग्म, word and sentence correction, idioms, official letters) and General English (tenses, voice, narration, articles, prepositions, translation, comprehension, letter writing).
Where it is narrower — and wider — than the Graduation paper
Side by side, advertisements 08/2026 and 09/2026 differ in ways worth planning around.
- The paper is smaller. 120 questions, 240 marks and 2 hours 30 minutes here, against 150 questions, 300 marks and 3 hours at Graduation level.
- Indian History and Indian Economy are absent. Both are separate headings at Graduation level; here, history means Rajasthan's history and economy means Rajasthan's economy.
- Geography of India is narrower — and wider in one line. Crops, minerals, energy resources, industries, transport and population are not in this syllabus though they are in the Graduation one. In exchange, major tribes appears under this heading here and not under the Graduation one.
- The polity list is shorter. The Constituent Assembly, constitutional amendments, emergency provisions, public interest litigation, the Comptroller and Auditor General, the Finance Commission, Lokpal, NITI Aayog, Lokayukta and the State Finance Commission are all absent. Added in their place: the State Chief Secretary.
- Science leans a different way. The heading is "Everyday Science" — chemistry, optics, genetics and biotechnology. The Graduation heading, "Science and Technology", runs instead to acids and bases, electric current, heat and energy, information and communication technology, defence and space.
- Computer Knowledge is three bullets — characteristics, organisation and MS Office. Graduation adds operating systems, internet and e-mail, cyber security, e-services and AI.
- The languages differ in small print. General Hindi adds शब्द-युग्म and drops राजभाषा and विराम चिह्न. General English carries no idioms and phrases.
The order of work follows: everything the two share first, then India-wide history, the Indian economy and the wider lists after 25 October. MeritPrep's Senior Secondary course follows the order of these twelve headings.
No section-wise split is published
Neither advertisement gives one: 08/2026 publishes no heading-wise question count, and neither does 09/2026. Any table telling you how many questions come from Rajasthan geography or from science has been worked back from previous papers — an estimate, not the board's split. Useful for deciding what to study first; not a reason to drop a heading.
Frequently asked
When is the CET Senior Secondary 2026 exam?
The board's chairman has said the exam is being put back because of the local body and panchayat elections (press report, 22 September 2026). The board has issued no written notification of a new date, so none is given here — this post will be updated as soon as one appears.
How many questions are there, and how long is the paper?
120 questions, 240 marks and 2 hours 30 minutes. Every syllabus heading sits in that one paper (advertisement 08/2026, para 17, page 15).
What happens if I leave a question unanswered?
You must darken circle E against it. If none of the five circles is darkened, one-third of that question's marks is deducted, and a candidate who leaves more than 10% of questions with no circle darkened is disqualified. Ten extra minutes are given after the scheduled time just for darkening E.
Is the Senior Secondary syllabus the same as the Graduation one?
No. The Senior Secondary syllabus carries no Indian History and no Indian Economy heading, its polity and computer lists are shorter, and the paper is 120 questions against the Graduation paper's 150. It is wider in a few places too — major tribes under Geography of India, and शब्द-युग्म under General Hindi.
How many questions come from each heading?
Officially, nobody says. Neither the Senior Secondary advertisement nor the Graduation one publishes a heading-wise count. The tables in circulation are estimates worked back from previous papers.
